About

History

The Firm of Burningham & Brown Solicitors was established just before the outbreak of World War II by Peter Hammett Brown and Godfrey Aldophis Burningham. When they returned from serving in the War, they took over the long established Firm of Ernest J.White & Co. Ernest White had been a previous mayor of Bath and the Firm has continued to be an integral part of the Bath community ever since.

Bath Rugby has always had a strong connection with the Firm. Many of the former Partners and Staff either played rugby for the club or supported it in other roles. David Gay was playing for Bath when he was capped for England in 1968 at 19 years old and still remains the youngest number 8 to have played for England.

David Gay is now the sole proprietor and is supported by loyal and experienced Staff who, as a group, have taken part in regular events to raise money for charity, and in the recent years the beneficiaries of our charitable collections have included The British Lung Foundation, The Stroke Association and The Moorfield Eye Charity.

Burningham & Brown, for the fifth year running, took part in the RUH Make a Will month in September 2019. We have been awarded the "Corporate Partner" fundraising plaque for raising over £10,000.00.

The office has always been centrally located in Bath starting out in Pierrepont Street, and moving to 1 Queen Square in 1970. When an opportunity to move across the Square to No. 20 Queen Square arose the office moved for the second time in 10 years and No. 20 has remained Burningham and Brown's permanent home ever since.

The fact that Burningham & brown remains one of Bath's best-known Private Client legal practices can be attributed partly to its history, but also to the consistent presence of the Firm in the community, coupled with the staff and Partner's extensive local knowledge over the generations, which has allowed it to continuously meet the needs of each individual Client.

Why are we different?

We are different because we treat every client as an individual and not as part of "a process". Our staff are easy to talk to and will listen to what you want.

Your whole matter will always be dealt with by an experienced qualified and regulated Solicitor who can be trusted to have your best interests at heart.

We always make sure we are readily contactable (by direct dial telephone number, e-mail or even letter!) and pride ourselves on providing excellent client service in a friendly, approachable and welcoming environment.

We are not complacent. Although our regular client care surveys show a high level of satisfaction, we know we must constantly strive to improve the service we offer and be alert to our clients' best interests.

We are confident that we are competitive on price but still provide quality service.

We will always provide clear details of what the transaction entails and our expected costs prior to commencement of a matter. In the current financial climate, price together with good client service, remain difficult to find.
